Joanne started running in the early 1970's and joined the Cape Cod Athletic Club in its early years. Racing almost every weekend, many times back to back, she would travel from one race to the next. In 1990 she entered the world of multisport, tackling duathlons and frequently capturing age-group wins. A trip in 1992 to Switzerland for the Powerman Zofingen was cut short by the sight of the steep downhills and treacherous turns but in 1994 she returned to complete the race. In 1991 Joanne ran her first Boston Marathon and then repeated 5 more times, also making periodic stops at New York City, Cape Cod and the Disney World marathons. At the insistence of some training friends, she entered the regional Senior Games making appearances in the cycling, running, discus and shot-put events and then traveled to St. George, Utah to participate in the World Senior Games. In 2003, training and competition was derailed by chronic fatigue and sickness that was eventually diagnosed (2005) as Lyme Disease. Still undergoing aggressive treatment, Joanne continues to be involved in CCAC events and local races as much as she can.
