About The Trail

The Johnny Kelley Recreation Area, a tribute to Dennis' marathon man Johnny Kelley, is a full function recreation location with tennis courts, two ball fields, a playground and a picnic area. The trail is a wide, flat dirt lane around the fields and through a wooded section of the area slated to become a pool and indoor gym facility. The outer trail is just over 0.5 mile long and the inner cut will give you a north loop of about 0.3 mile and a south loop of about 0.4 mile. A favorite of local walkers from the immediate area, the trail features a number of fitness course stations and a braille trail, a rope around the perimeter of the trail with descriptive braille signs. Although kids will ride bikes across the course, bicycles should be avoided due to the shortness of the trail and the number of walkers in the area, especially during the summer months. The trail is good for cross-country training with a number of sharp turns but you'll have to look elsewhere for hills and log jumps. The rec area anchors the bike trail along Old Bass River Road and is a great place to park for access to the Dennis Bike Paths. The rec area also plays host to the annual Dennis Festival Days 5K sponsored by the Dennis Chamber of Commerce on Labor Day.
