Special Notes

Marking the start of the new year, the Cape Cod Road Runners Winter Fun Run is a New England favorite, periodically turning up in the Hockomock Swamp Rat's Grand Pricks series of the toughest races in New England. Some years are sparsely attended, others will draw a large following and you never know who might show up as local elite runners use the race as a mid-winter staleness fighter. Typical New England winter weather is a hallmark with some balmy years in the 50’s and some years of sheet ice and temperatures in the single digits. Since the course uses markings from a mid-summer 10K, mile 3-4 is short (the 0.9 mile) and from 4 to the finish is a full mile. The original course included a jaunt through the woods but that was discarded in the late 1990’s when landowners complained and blocked off the access way. Entry fees have always been the lowest around and benefit the Bourne Conservation Trust. A pair of cotton running gloves are given to every runner as long as they last and the Weary Travelers Lodge’s clam fritters and chowder after the run can’t be beat.

The Course

Start in front of the Weary Travelers lodge and take Valley Bars Road out to Clay Pond Road. Turn left on Clay Pond Road, pass over County Road and turn left on Shore Road. Turn left on to Midway Road and take your next right on to Harwood Drive. Turn left on Valley Bars Road to your next left on County Road and continue on County Road to a right turn on Clay Pond Road. Return to the lodge with a right turn on to Valley Bars Road.

Getting There

From the Bourne Bridge, take Route 28 south to Clay Pond Road. Take your third left on to Valley Bars Road. The Weary Travelers Club is located at the end of Valley Bars Road. Plenty of parking is available along Valley Bars Road and behind the Weary Travelers Club.
