An open letter to club members and friends from Lucy Duffy concerning her 2012 Pan Mass Challenge ride in August:
Dear Family and Friends,
Why I Ride:
Bennett Hartley is my 8 year old friend from Brewster and my church. He is a wonderful, bright, spunky lad who inspires us all with his courage and forbearance in the long difficult treatment for leukemia.
I am riding the Pan Mass Challenge for Bennett. He was my hero last June for the 100 mile Lake Tahoe ride which raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The Pan Mass Challenge is an annual bike-a-thon that is THE original athletic fundraiser of its kind. Since 1980, the PMC has raised $338 million for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The Jimmy Fund is where Bennett goes every three weeks to kick leukemia forever. It is an amazing place where children are treated regardless of their ability to pay. What strikes me as a crucially important about this event is that 100% of its rider-raised funding goes directly to the cause.
I may be crazy at the age of 79 to take on this challenge, but surviving the difficult mountainous Tahoe ride last June in the cold pouring rain has given me confidence. The difficulty of that ride is nothing compared to the difficult time since Bennett’s diagnosis of leukemia in January of 2011.
My passion to keep moving towards a cure for cancer has continued since my husband Allen died of leukemia in 1986 and is strengthened by supporting Bennett and also by my own cancer survival since December of 2010. I have done many marathons, triathlons and last June got my triple crown for having participated in all three events with Team in Training and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I am grateful to you all for your support for these events for many years. (something over $200,000)
This summer, the ride takes place August 4th and 5th. After some minor surgery which sidelined me this winter, (not cancer related) I will get back on my zippy red bike and ride 163 miles from Wellesley to Provincetown and strive to put all the positive energy from my supporters towards raising money for kids with cancer and for research to find a cure. I have joined BENNETT’S BRIGADE a team of 10 riders, organized by Bennett’s family. We hope to raise lots of money. Keep tuned for information about an upcoming event! We will raise money as a group and individually.
My personal goal is $10,000. I ask you to contribute any amount. I would be so grateful. To contribute:
1) Send a check made payable to the Pan-Mass Challenge to my address 206 Wauquanesit, Brewster,MA 02631
2) Use your credit card via my PMC site: http://www.pmc.org/profile/LG0151
Thanks and love,
Thank you again for your support of Bennett and his family, THE BENNETT BRIGADE, and me!!!!
